Open Eye Visuals

from Less Is More by LucillePSax

about

Through continual uniform movement, a sense of stillness arises.

Just as the shapes of ripples on a lake are to look upon: always the same, but never the same.

Three short phrases of different lengths are repeated, producing different arrangements and permutations of the rhythmic material whilst leaving the harmonic language unchanged. As these permutations unfold, different notes within the phrases are emphasised, creating subtle accents and artifacts within the texture. The static harmony illustrates the broader stillness of the subject matter, whilst the ever-changing texture depicts the constant movement found within it.

Gradually the frequency with which the motifs occur lessens, introducing space and silence into the piece, so that the listener can discern more clearly the individual phrases which make up the soundworld, even as the soundworld itself dissipates into silence.

The title refers to visual distortions known to occur under the influence of psychoactive compounds, which behave in the same manner.
