Motion

about

Motion, for alto saxophone and piano, is based on the development of a single melodic idea and takes influence from the minimalist techniques of phasing and additive process. The first section is rooted in an additive process; a melodic or rhythmic idea that is broken down into one cell or short idea and is then gradually expanded to form a whole melodic or rhythmic pattern. In Motion, the saxophone and piano begin in unison with a fragment of the main melody. The melody is gradually built up by the saxophone and the phrase is lengthened, although still in a fragmented form. The full, legato form of the melody is not heard until the second section. The second section is inspired by the phase music of Steve Reich. Phasing requires at least two lines playing identical material; one of these lines is shifted out of sync with the other, generating continual rhythmic variation. It's use in this section involves the two instruments playing similar lines a quaver apart from one another, creating syncopation (which becomes a prominent feature). The final section of the piece creates a juxtaposition of the first two sections by combining the two techniques, resulting in a new, but related texture and feel. The section introduces no new material, instead developing and expanding on earlier ideas.
