Back To Phase

from Less Is More by LucillePSax

/

about

There are three main sections of the piece, using various minimalist techniques to generate the musical material. The first section of the piece uses phase very strictly, using Steve Reich’s clapping music as a template. The saxophone sets the initial seven beat theme which is then doubled by the piano. The phase is initiated when the saxophone’s theme is displaced by one crotchet every eight repetitions. The phase is complete when both parts play in unison. The second section furthers the idea of displacement. The previous thematic material is continued on the piano as an accompaniment and a new theme is introduced on the saxophone. On every two repetitions the saxophones new theme is displaced by a crotchet, this gives the melodic material continuous rhythmic variation but also a stable harmonic language because the pitches are not changed. The third section uses fragments of material from the first section. It is chopped up and placed into different time signatures. Giving the effect of a vinyl disk being stuck in a groove.
